![]() It became an integral part of his life, especially when he launched his very own company in 2017 called The Float Life. But that passion wasn’t only confined to the quick weekend rides on the bustling streets and the neighborhood. Jeff McCosker is among one of the many Californians who discovered Onewheeling and became passionate about it. Think of it as a skateboard and a Segway getting together and having a baby.” “The interesting thing about Onewheeling compared to the other board sports out there is that you have a gyro and it’s self-balancing,” Jeff McCosker said. The Float Life and the Onewheel Community After 8 years of tinkering, planning, and designing a handful of prototypes, Doerksen eventually quit his day job and founded his company, Future Motion Inc. And it’s all thanks to the genius mind of Kyle Doerksen - the brainchild behind Onewheel. ![]() You can say that the Onewheel is an impressive feat of engineering, because it really is. As the Onewheel uses a combination of sensors, it monitors your motion and provides the correct voltage to the drive hub motor. And the more you lean, the faster you’ll go. When you lean forward, the board’s electronic controllers take control. Combined with the way the board balances gives a very unique feel to riding and is often referred to as floating in the Onewheel community. Having a single large tire helps you more easily ride over uneven terrain and on more technical trails that are typically used for mountain bikes. To use the board, you have to step on the platform with your trailing leg, placing your front foot on the blue section of the front to engage the sensors. The single wheel contains a brushless electric motor that propels riders forwards or backward. What is Onewheel?Ī Onewheel is essentially an electric skateboard. While these boards don't exactly veer away from the sense of familiarity with skateboarding, Onewheeling offers a whole new experience of what board sports are all about. For so many years, skateboards ruled the West Coast - particularly in Los Angeles, where every skatepark teem with its own set of features.īut in 2014, Onewheel boards emerged and even skateboarders found themselves enjoying the riding experience. In California, the streets are abound with men and women navigating on their Onewheels. “It would make a lot of sense for Arm to at least have a secondary listing on the London Stock Exchange eventually.Austen Silva racing on his Onewheel XR at FloatLife Fest. ![]() “Arm is a UK company, arguably one of the more globally successful technology companies in the UK, and there is a lot of support in the London City for Arm,” he said. Softbank said on Saturday it had submitted a draft registration statement for the listing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission. “The fact is that New York of course is a much deeper market than London, partially because of the Brexit idiocy the image of London has suffered a lot in the international community.” “The problem is, to IPO on two stock exchanges at the same time is an enormous amount of work, so the administrative effort is double,” he said. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, he explained why in his view the business had decided against a dual listing in London and New York.

Shortly afterwards Rusty Day was fired from the group. Impairment of OT signaling in the brain may underlie cognitive and emotional dysfunction associated with neurodevelopmental disorders (for example, autism spectrum disorders and schizophrenia) and brain aging 2, 3. In addition, axons of OT neurons project to numerous other brain regions, where they release OT to regulate diverse physiological functions, such as sensory processing, feeding control, social cognition and emotion 1. ![]() OT neurons primarily send axons to the posterior pituitary, where OT is released into the peripheral circulation as a peripheral hormone that promotes childbirth and lactation. OT, a neuropeptide produced by neurons in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and supraoptic nucleus of the hypothalamus, regulates many physiological processes in both peripheral tissues and the central nervous system. MTRIA OT will likely enable the analysis of OT dynamics in a variety of physiological and pathological processes. MTRIA OT-mediated measurements indicate variability of OT dynamics depending on the behavioral context and physical condition of an animal. By combining viral gene delivery and fiber photometry-mediated fluorescence measurements, we demonstrate the utility of MTRIA OT for real-time detection of brain OT dynamics in living mice. Here, we describe MTRIA OT, a G-protein-coupled receptor-based green fluorescent OT sensor that has a large dynamic range, suitable affinity, ligand specificity for OT orthologs, minimal effects on downstream signaling and long-term fluorescence stability. However, the relationship between brain OT dynamics and complex animal behaviors remains largely elusive, partly because of the lack of a suitable technique for its real-time recording in vivo. So having read some of this work before, I approached the CD with an eye towards the relationship between the content and the user interface-between what it says about design and what it does about design. Norman is definitely a charming and videogenic presence, and the audio and video segments on this CD are fun to hear and watch, but they are not a particularly strong support or augmentation of the content of the text-partly because he is already a writer of great warmth, persuasiveness, and vivid personal voice, and partly because the talks seem shallower and less carefully crafted than the books.Ī more compelling reason for making this CD-ROM might have been to exemplify the design principles the books themselves espouse. ![]() He does not elaborate as much as one would wish on how an indexed CD is better than reissuing the books as a set in print format with a unified index. It boils down to two considerations: the utility of an automated index for all three books, and the cogency and immediacy of being able to see and hear the author himself talk about the work. Though he mentions his general concern that a CD-ROM on design issues should be well-designed, and that particular features should be helpfully crafted, Norman's discussion of his reasons for making the CD in the first place is surprisingly brief (not to mention hard to locate). Such reflections are largely unexpressed on the CD itself. Given the content of these works, we may assume Norman thought long and hard before putting them on a CD-ROM: What would this technology do that print could not, or do better? What should be the relationship between the CD's form and its content? How might its very design aid the user's grasp of the specific ideas being presented? The Carelman images portray a series of whimsical imaginary devices with nonsensical relationships between their forms and their apparent functions. In Things That Make Us Smart, Norman examines how technologies can amplify (rather than thwart) human cognitive capabilities. Turn Signals are the Facial Expressions of Automobiles is a wider-ranging exploration of the societal relationships between humans and technology. ![]() The earliest of the books, The Design of Everything Things, focuses on Norman's ideas about user-centered design, a concern that continues to reverberate through the later books and many of the essays and talks: in Norman's view technological devices (from doors and faucets to electronics) should facilitate their own lucid and successful use. Norman's books and essays on this CD all deal with the relationships between people and technology. Supporting materials on the CD include an Index (or rather, both a traditional book index appearing as text with page references for topical terms, and a Find function that will retrieve instances of any word or phrase), a glossary, and text transcripts of the audio and video segments. Also included are an introduction containing video segments of Norman giving three original short talks, plus video clips of Norman explaining aspects of the CD itself an Essays section containing previously published articles written or co-written by Norman and "The Gallery of Unfindable Things," a selection of images by artist Jacques Carelman from his book Catalogue d'objets introuvables, with audio commentary by Norman. Perhaps more importantly it frees those Laborers up to do other work in other buildings if the state is running low on workers. This costs the building some money in the form of Coal and Engines, but reduces the amount of money they have to pay in wages. Once invented, portable Steam Donkey engines can be deployed at mining sites to drastically reduce the amount of manual labor required just for hauling. By researching less volatile Dynamite, even more minerals are extracted at the expense of even more Explosives, with the additional benefit that far fewer workers will blow themselves up on the job. Once Nitroglycerin is invented, it can be used in mines to generate even more minerals, at the expense of Explosives produced by the Chemical Industry but also with a higher rate of workplace accidents. The revolution in chemical sciences of the era also enabled the use of explosives in mining, which is a secondary Production Method category used only in mines. This creates more demand for qualified workers and also opens up a number of better paid positions to those Pops who meet the qualifications. With higher tech pumps comes a requirement for more Engineers and Machinists to be on-site to control and oversee its operation. The more advanced the pumping mechanism the more deposits can be accessed and the faster Iron can be mined, but the more Coal or Oil is used in the process. There are several different pumping technologies which also determine what fuel is used. Simple Food Industries are operated by Merchant Guilds (Shopkeepers), while more advanced and profitable Food Industries are owned by Capitalists who reinvest some of their dividends.Īs one example, an Iron Mine's base Production Method determines if miners use only picks and shovels or if they also use some sort of engine-driven pumping mechanism. With advanced technologies Food Industries can be partially automated, drastically reducing the need for unskilled labor. They can also refine Grain and Sugar into Liquor (Distilleries). With the right technologies Food Industries can make Groceries from both Grain (Bakeries) and Fish (Canneries). Ownership: determines who owns shares in the building typically governed by Laws Refining: reduces output of typical goods in favor of output of specialized or luxury goods, sometimes adding a special inputĪutomation: adds industrial goods as input to reduce the building's unskilled workforce requirement ![]() Most categories fall into one of these types:īase: governs the general "tech level" and efficiency of the building, produces goods typical for the building type Only one is active at any given time in each category. As a result, buildings in Victoria 3 require more flexible upgrade paths than what's afforded by permanent, linear, “no-brainer” improvements.Īll buildings have several categories of Production Methods, usually between 2 and 5. Improving industrial processes over time is to be expected, but in some cases those improvements might require goods as input that the country has scant access to, while others permit the output of a new type of end product at the expense of the old one. But in Victoria 3 there are no actions without reactions, and novel innovations don't just make buildings better with no side effects. In these games, after the upgrade investment has been paid the impact is permanent and nearly always superior in every way to the building's previous functionality. Many management games let you upgrade a building to increase its efficiency or expand its functionality. ![]() These determine the functions of the building, its inputs and outputs, and what employee types it requires to operate. ![]() However, resort employees noticed that the lake had begun to refill during a wet spring of 2020, and the lake had refilled to about a third full by July 14th. In 2006, it dropped again, and emptied completely for several days, leaving behind dead and rotting fish. It first dropped in 1999, and returned to its normal levels in 2003. The lake's water levels had fluctuated dramatically over the previous 20 years. From 2008 to 2020, Mountain Lake was nothing more than a reddish-brown pit, only partially filled with water. The last such level fluctuations occurred between 17 as historical accounts give widely different accounts of the lake size. Since 2002 it has been subject to dry-season level drops of as much as 15 feet (4.6 m). ![]() It is more than 100 feet (30 m) deep when full. Because of narrow channels and openings in the lake bottom, the level has a history of changing dramatically depending on the water flow through these channels. Cold underground springs feed the lake and rarely allow the temperature to rise above 70 ☏ (21 ☌) on the surface and 46 ☏ (8 ☌) fifty feet (15 m) below the surface. The lake is estimated to be about 6,000 years old, and geologists believe it must have been formed by rock slides and damming. Replenishment of the water lost depends on rain levels, and apparent washing-out of sediment from the fissured bedrock bottom is causing the unstable lake levels. Recent scientific studies indicate that an unusual combination of natural processes created the lake, which is maintained by a fissure at the bottom that provides an outlet for both sediment and water and prevents the lake from otherwise simply becoming a bog. But the basis on which this lake-the only natural one in the southern Appalachians-exists has been the source of much speculation. ![]() Natural lakes are common well to the north, where the Appalachian Range was subject to geologically recent glacial activity. It subsequently became known as Salt Pond. The first known written evidence of the lake was by Christopher Gist of the Ohio Land Surveying Company, in 1751. Mountain Lake typically covers about 50 acres (200,000 m 2), and its level was largely constant at an elevation of 3,875 feet (1,181 m) during the 19th and 20th centuries. The area is within the Mountain Lake Wilderness Cluster. It was originally known as Salt Pond, as it was where cattle were given salt. Along with Lake Drummond in the Great Dismal Swamp, it is one of only two natural lakes in Virginia. Mountain Lake is a freshwater lake located in Giles County near Newport, Virginia in the United States. Jon Cawley, Roanoke College professor, said, “This lake basin is the only one on the planet that goes through this sort of cyclicity and has this sort of plumbing system and sometimes mysteriously disappears to “self-clean.” When the lake drains - when it actually empties out - it cleans itself by moving sediment that has accrued in the bottom of the lake down through that rather complex plumbing system to actually make the lake bigger, deeper, and keep it clean. In spring 2020, their efforts proved successful as the lake began to refill. Seeking to restore the lake, scientists have worked for years to identify and remediate holes in the lakebed, to ultimately introduce a natural process that would reduce leakage. Since the film’s release in 1987, however, the lake’s water levels have diminished. During the film, Grey (Baby Houseman) is taught to dance by Swayze (Johnny Castle) with one of the most memorable scenes taking place in the lake itself. In the movie, the lake was featured in its full glory as part of the resort where the Houseman family is vacationing. Every 400 years, Mountain Lake in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains drains and becomes completely dry, as part of a unique self-cleaning cycle. ![]() Plumbing, Instrumentation and Control for Plumbing, Plumbing Piping, Plumbing Equipment, Healthcare Plumbing Fixtures, Drinking Fountains and Water Coolers, Gas and Vacuum Systems for Laboratory and Healthcare Facilities, Compressed-Air Systems for Laboratory and Healthcare Facilities, Vacuum Systems for Laboratory and Healthcare Facilities, Gas Systems for Laboratory and Healthcare Facilities, Chemical-Waste Systems for Laboratory and Healthcare Facilities, Processed Water Systems for Laboratory and Healthcare Facilities. ![]() Special Construction, Radiation Protection.įire Suppression, Fire-Suppression Sprinkler Systems, Fire-Extinguishing Systems.
